Anambra State, Nigeria – June 5, 2025

In a deeply disturbing and heartbreaking event that has sparked outrage and debate across social media, a woman—reportedly a mother of two—lost her life after being accused of stealing a wrapper and a bag of rice at a local market in Anambra State.

Eyewitnesses say the woman was caught by traders and some members of the public who claimed she was attempting to make away with the items without payment. What began as a confrontation quickly escalated into mob violence. Before any authorities could intervene, the woman was brutally beaten and, in a shocking act of lawlessness, set ablaze.

Photos from the scene, too graphic to share in full, show a crowd gathered as smoke billowed from the location. Many onlookers were reportedly recording the incident rather than trying to stop it, raising further concerns about the growing culture of mob justice in the region.

Local authorities have since arrived at the scene and confirmed the incident. The woman’s identity has not yet been officially released, but sources say she was a widow and the mother of two young children.

Reacting to the tragic news, human rights activists and concerned citizens have taken to social media to condemn the act, calling for immediate justice and urging law enforcement agencies to arrest those involved.

“This is heartbreaking,” one Twitter user wrote. “Even if she stole, does that justify killing her like an animal? Nigeria has completely lost its humanity.”

Community leaders and NGOs are urging the public to stop taking the law into their own hands and to report suspected crimes to the police.

This tragic event is the latest in a string of vigilante-style incidents that have raised serious questions about the effectiveness of Nigeria’s justice system and the desperation many face in today’s harsh economic climate.

The Anambra State Police Command is currently investigating the incident, and they have asked anyone with relevant information or video evidence to come forward to aid in their inquiries.
