Tragedy struck this morning in Umuahia, the capital city of Abia State, as a young man lost his life barely 15 minutes after being bitten by a snake.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 7:30 AM in the Ndume Ibeku area of the city. The victim, identified as Chinedu (surname withheld), was said to be on his way to his farm when he accidentally stepped on the snake hidden under a pile of dry leaves along a bushy footpath.
A local resident, Mrs. Ngozi Nwosu, recounted the terrifying moment:
"He screamed and fell immediately. We rushed over and saw the snake slither away. Within minutes, his body started reacting. We tried to take him to the hospital, but he gave up before we even got halfway."
Photos from the scene show local sympathizers gathered around the lifeless body, visibly shaken by the speed of the tragic event. The snake, believed to be a highly venomous species, has not yet been captured.
Locals have called on government authorities and community leaders to take immediate steps to clear overgrown paths and sensitize residents about snakebite first aid and emergency response. Many also believe that stocking local clinics with anti-venom could help prevent such avoidable deaths in the future.
This unfortunate loss has sent a wave of sorrow through the community, with many describing Chinedu as a hardworking and humble man known for his dedication to farming and caring for his family.
