Mokwa, Niger State — Tragedy struck this evening as a powerful and unexpected flood swept through Mokwa town in Niger State, leaving a trail of destruction and sorrow. According to local reports, at least 150 people have been confirmed dead, over 200 others are still missing, and 50 houses were completely washed away in what residents are calling the worst flood in the town’s history.

Eyewitnesses describe the disaster as sudden and ferocious. Torrential rains that began in the late afternoon quickly overwhelmed the town’s drainage system, causing the nearby River Niger to overflow its banks. Within hours, entire neighborhoods were submerged, and families were seen fleeing for their lives.

"We have never seen anything like this," said a distraught resident. "The water came with such force that people didn’t even have time to gather their belongings. Houses collapsed in minutes, and people were swept away."

Rescue operations are ongoing, with local volunteers, emergency services, and the Nigerian Red Cross searching for survivors and recovering bodies. However, rescue efforts have been hampered by the collapse of key bridges and washed-out roads.

The Chairman of Mokwa Local Government Area has called for immediate assistance from both the state and federal governments. In a brief statement to the press, he said:

“This is a humanitarian disaster. We need urgent help—boats, food, shelter, and medical supplies. Our people are suffering.”

In addition to the staggering human loss, farmlands, markets, and critical infrastructure have been destroyed, raising concerns about food shortages and displacement in the coming weeks.

Niger State Governor has been briefed on the situation and is expected to visit the affected areas by tomorrow morning. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has also been mobilized to assess the scale of the disaster and provide emergency relief.
