In a bizarre and shocking incident that has left residents of Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos State, in utter disbelief, a 34-year-old man identified as Chuka Eze allegedly took the life of his neighbor following a long-standing tension rooted in a seemingly harmless question: "When are you getting married?"

According to eyewitnesses and community members, the suspect, known in the area for his quiet demeanor and intense love for solitude, had reportedly been subjected to repeated teasing and unsolicited marital advice by his neighbor, Mr. Kunle Ajayi, a 45-year-old businessman and father of three.

"Kunle was always in everybody’s business," said Mrs. Agnes Olowu, a neighbor. "He was the type that would turn small talk into a sermon. Chuka just didn’t find it funny anymore."

Sources reveal that Chuka had received the marriage question from Mr. Ajayi almost every weekend, especially during compound meetings and casual encounters. “At first, he used to laugh it off,” said a local barber who requested anonymity. “But over time, it seemed like he started taking it personally.”

Things reportedly escalated last Sunday when Mr. Ajayi made a remark during a community sanitation gathering, saying, “If Chuka no marry this year, we go contribute bride price for am.” The statement was met with laughter from other residents — but Chuka didn’t laugh.

Later that evening, things took a dark turn.

According to police reports, an altercation broke out between the two men. Neighbors say they heard shouting and crashing sounds from Chuka’s apartment. By the time security operatives arrived, Mr. Ajayi was found unconscious with severe head trauma. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest of the suspect and stated that investigations were ongoing. “This is a deeply unfortunate incident,” he said. “We urge Nigerians to be more sensitive with their words, as even lighthearted comments can trigger extreme reactions in people dealing with private struggles.”

The tragic event has sparked intense conversations online about societal pressure, toxic expectations, and the dangerous culture of marital probing in Nigeria.

Photos from the scene show a blood-stained corridor, shocked residents gathered in groups, and officers taking Chuka into custody. The compound, which was once lively and filled with laughter, now stands eerily silent.

As the community mourns the loss of Mr. Ajayi, many are left wondering: Was it just a joke — or a ticking time bomb that finally exploded?
