So Sad: Massive Elephant křuśhěs Car With Family of 5 Inside at Okomu National Park, Edo State — Only One Survivor (Photos)"

In what can only be described as a heart-wrenching tragedy, a family’s visit to Okomu National Park in Edo State turned fatal when a massive elephant attacked and crushed their vehicle, leaving only one survivor.

The shocking incident occurred on a quiet Tuesday afternoon when the family of five, reportedly on a holiday getaway from Benin City, drove into the park to enjoy the serene beauty of Nigeria’s rich wildlife. Eyewitnesses say the elephant, which had strayed unusually close to one of the visitor paths, appeared agitated and charged unexpectedly.

According to park officials, the elephant, believed to be a dominant male, suddenly rammed into the family’s car — a black Toyota Camry — flipping it over before repeatedly stomping on it. Despite immediate efforts by park rangers and emergency responders, four of the five occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.

The sole survivor, a young teenage girl believed to be around 13 years old, was pulled from the wreckage in critical condition and has been rushed to a hospital in Benin for urgent care.

Photos from the scene show the devastating aftermath: the car is barely recognizable — flattened, windows shattered, and the roof completely caved in. Rescue officials could be seen surrounding the site, visibly shaken by the magnitude of the destruction.

Authorities are currently investigating what may have triggered the elephant’s aggression. While such attacks are rare, wildlife experts warn that the dry season often brings animals closer to human activity in search of food and water, increasing the chances of human-wildlife conflict.

The management of Okomu National Park has expressed deep regret over the incident and has promised a full review of safety protocols within the park. “This is a deeply saddening moment for us all. We are cooperating fully with local authorities and will do everything in our power to ensure something like this never happens again,” a park spokesperson stated.

The names of the victims have not yet been officially released, as next of kin are being notified.

This tragic event has reignited conversations about wildlife safety, eco-tourism policies, and the urgent need for stronger boundaries between human activity and wildlife habitats.

Our hearts go out to the grieving family, and we pray for the full recovery of the young survivor.
