This morning started like any other Sunday for 36-year-old Blessing Okojie, a single mother of three from Benin City. Known by neighbors as a hardworking woman of deep faith, Blessing had made it a personal mission to raise her children right—against all odds.
She juggled multiple jobs just to make ends meet. A cleaner by morning, a roadside food vendor by evening—Blessing's hands were always busy, but her heart never stopped praying. Her dream was simple: give her children the kind of life she never had. Education, faith, and love—that was her foundation.
Every Sunday without fail, Blessing would get the kids dressed in their best clothes, pile them into her old Toyota Corolla, and drive them to church. It was their sacred family routine. Today, however, tragedy struck.
A Tragic Turn
Around 7:45 AM this morning, on their way to church along the Sapele Road axis, Blessing’s car was reportedly hit by a speeding truck. Witnesses say the truck driver lost control while trying to avoid a pothole. The impact sent Blessing's vehicle crashing into a roadside gutter, flipping it on its side.
Passersby rushed to the scene. According to an eyewitness, "We heard a loud crash. People screamed. When we got there, the woman was holding onto her youngest child, crying and calling for help."
Emergency responders arrived about 20 minutes later and rushed the family to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
Condition of the Family
As of the time of this report, Blessing is said to be in stable condition, though in shock. Her three children—a boy and two girls aged between 5 and 11—sustained various injuries. One of the girls is reportedly in critical condition and currently receiving intensive care.
A Community Rallies
Word of the accident has sparked a wave of emotion in the community. Neighbors, church members, and even strangers have begun organizing prayer chains and fundraising efforts to help Blessing and her children with their medical bills.
“This woman has suffered too much. She’s always on her feet, doing everything to give her children hope,” said Mrs. Obaseki, a member of her church. “She needs us now.”
