A deeply disturbing incident has left residents of Ugbowo, Benin City in shock, after a woman was reportedly arrested this morning for allegedly taking the life of her two-year-old daughter and preparing her remains as pepper soup.
According to early reports, neighbors raised an alarm after perceiving a strange smell coming from the woman's one-room apartment. What they discovered has since sparked outrage and heartbreak across social media and within the local community.
Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the woman, whose name is being withheld pending official police release, confessed to the horrific act during interrogation, claiming she was driven by extreme hunger and poverty.
> “She said she hadn’t eaten in days and had no one to turn to,” a resident, who asked not to be named, said. “But nobody imagined she could do something like this. That was her only child.”
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the arrest, stating that an investigation is ongoing and a psychiatric evaluation has been requested.
Photos circulating online (viewer discretion advised) appear to show officers removing a pot of food from the scene, covered and sealed as evidence.
Social media platforms have since exploded with reactions ranging from anger and disbelief to calls for better mental health support and stronger social welfare systems.
One Twitter user wrote:
> “This is beyond comprehension. But it’s also a reminder that many Nigerians are suffering in silence. Hunger is killing people slowly.”
Another user added:
> “This woman needs help, not just punishment. Where was society when she needed food? Where was the government?”
While many demand justice for the innocent child, others are questioning how desperation and mental instability might have played a role in this tragic event.
This chilling story highlights the growing struggle among Nigeria’s poorest citizens and is already sparking national conversations about hunger, mental health, and the importance of community vigilance.
