Only survivor of the Air India crash has explained what happened that lead to the plane crash (Video)
When the world heard about the tragic crash of Air India Flight 217, hearts sank. With 189 souls onboard, the plane’s disappearance over the Western Ghats was initially met with confusion, followed by days of frantic rescue efforts. But what no one expected was the discovery of a lone survivor—22-year-old Meera Kulkarni, a student returning from Delhi to Kochi.
Now, weeks after the incident, Meera has broken her silence. In a raw, emotional video interview that has since gone viral, she recounts the harrowing moments that led to the disaster—and what happened inside the cabin in the final minutes before the crash.
> “There was a loud bang—like an explosion—followed by total darkness,” Meera recalls, her voice trembling. “The plane jolted and began tilting. Passengers were screaming. Some were praying. And then... silence. Just silence.”
According to Meera, Flight 217 began experiencing severe turbulence approximately 45 minutes before its scheduled landing. But what was brushed off by the crew as “normal” soon escalated into chaos. Oxygen masks deployed. Lights flickered. And then came the chilling message from the cockpit:
> “We’ve lost control of the left engine. Please remain calm. We are attempting an emergency descent.”
But calm was impossible. Meera described seeing sparks outside the left wing and the smell of burning metal. She clung to her seat as the plane nosedived.
“Somehow, I stayed conscious during the crash,” she said. “When I came to, I was hanging from my seatbelt, surrounded by trees and smoke. Everyone else… they were gone.”
Investigators have since corroborated parts of Meera’s account. Preliminary reports suggest that a rare mid-air mechanical failure triggered a chain of events that left the pilots with seconds to react. There’s also speculation about possible maintenance oversight, which is now under formal inquiry by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
But beyond the technical findings, Meera’s survival and bravery have touched the nation. In the video, she tearfully adds:
> “I don’t know why I survived. Maybe it’s so I could tell their story.”
She now wears a simple bracelet made from a piece of her seatbelt—her symbol of survival.
As the nation mourns, her words and courage offer a rare glimpse into the final moments of a flight that was never meant to end this
