Nigerian man Sells His K idney To Buy the latest IPhone 16 and wigs For his Girlfriend (Photos)
In a shocking and heartbreaking turn of events, a young Nigerian man has reportedly sold one of his kidneys to buy the latest iPhone 16 and luxury wigs for his girlfriend — a decision that has left social media users in disbelief and sparked a nationwide conversation about materialism, peer pressure, and the desperation of youth.
The man, identified only as Chuka (surname withheld), is said to be in his early twenties and a recent university graduate. According to close sources, he had been struggling to make ends meet after finishing school, with no stable job or income. Yet, he felt increasing pressure to “level up” and impress his girlfriend, whom he had met on Instagram during his final year.
Friends say Chuka had been deeply infatuated with the young woman, a Lagos-based influencer known for flaunting high-end gadgets, designer clothes, and imported wigs on her page. "She used to post stuff like ‘Don’t talk to me if your phone isn’t giving iPhone energy,’” one friend shared. “He just wanted to feel worthy of her.”
According to reports, Chuka secretly traveled to a neighboring country where he underwent an illegal kidney removal surgery. With the proceeds, estimated at roughly $20,000 (over ₦30 million), he returned to Nigeria and splurged on an iPhone 16 Pro Max, along with three luxury bone-straight wigs worth over ₦4 million each. He even arranged a surprise "unveiling" for his girlfriend at a lounge in Lekki.
Photos from the event, now circulating online, show Chuka presenting the gifts while smiling weakly, visibly pale and frail. His girlfriend, initially thrilled, posted the gifts on her story with the caption: "My man understood the assignment π ππΈ #SpoilMeOrLeaveMe".
However, the situation quickly turned tragic.
Sources close to the family say Chuka collapsed days later and had to be rushed to a hospital, where it was revealed that the kidney surgery had complications. His body was rejecting the single remaining kidney, and the lack of proper post-operative care worsened his condition. At the time of this report, Chuka is battling for his life in a poorly equipped clinic.
The girlfriend, whose identity is still being withheld, has reportedly cut ties and deleted all posts related to Chuka. When confronted, she simply responded: “I didn’t force him to do anything. I’m not a nurse.”
The story has sparked a firestorm on Nigerian Twitter and TikTok, with many blaming societal pressure, fake social media lifestyles, and the glorification of wealth over well-being.
“This isn’t love. It’s self-destruction masked as romance,” wrote one user. Another added, “We’re losing a generation to filters, clout, and unrealistic standards.”
As of now, Chuka's family is seeking public assistance to transfer him to a better medical facility. A GoFundMe has been set up, and many are calling for better awareness around illegal organ trade and mental health support for young Nigerians caught in the trap of social media validation.
