Construction worker survives after being Pi£rced by a 10ft long iron rod in the Head (Photos)
In a jaw-dropping twist of fate that can only be described as miraculous, a construction worker has survived a horrifying accident that saw a 10-foot-long iron rod pierce straight through his head — and live to tell the tale.
The freak incident occurred on a busy construction site earlier this week, when 31-year-old Samuel Okafor, a welder working on the second floor of a building project in Lagos, Nigeria, lost his balance while carrying out reinforcement work. Witnesses say Samuel tripped on loose wiring and fell headfirst onto a cluster of exposed iron rods — with one impaling him through the skull and exiting from the back of his head.
Photos from the scene are nothing short of terrifying, showing the massive iron rod extending nearly five feet in front and five feet behind his head, like something from a horror movie. Yet, against all odds, Samuel remained fully conscious.
> “I thought I was going to die. I could see people screaming, but I didn’t feel any pain at first,” Samuel recalled from his hospital bed.
Paramedics arrived on the scene within minutes. However, rather than attempt to remove the rod — a move that could have caused fatal bleeding — emergency crews cut the rod on both sides and rushed him to the hospital with more than three feet of metal still embedded in his skull.
Doctors at Lagos University Teaching Hospital performed a complex six-hour surgery, carefully navigating major blood vessels and nerves to remove the rod without causing brain damage. One of the surgeons, Dr. Tunde Balogun, called it “a one-in-a-million case of survival.”
> “The rod missed every major artery and critical brain structure by mere millimeters,” Dr. Balogun said. “It’s nothing short of a miracle.”
Despite the gruesome nature of the injury, Samuel is expected to make a full recovery, though doctors say he’ll need several months of therapy and observation.
The incident has raised urgent concerns about safety standards on construction sites. Workers at the site allege that harnesses and protective gear were not provided, despite the dangerous conditions.
Samuel’s story has since gone viral on social media, with people across the country celebrating his survival. Many have even started a GoFundMe campaign to support his medical expenses and recovery.
> “I survived for a reason,” Samuel said. “God gave me another chance, and I’m going to make it count.”
